Island must wake up

February 1, 2012Dear Sir,As One Bermuda Alliance leader Craig Cannonier has stated in an article in today’s Royal Gazette, Government’s credibility has been called into question the Island’s reputation is threatened and the misuse of public money exposed, and if it hadn’t been for the Auditor General reporting on the Bermuda Land Development Company, the public would never have known about this latest misuse of public funds. One has to ask just what other misuses of public funds there are that we don’t know about. I never thought I would see the day when Bermuda would be brought down to such despicably low depths by the PLP Government or any Government for that matter. And to think, in 1998 many people thought the UBP were the bad guys. What a joke! The supporters of this Government can say what they like, but the facts are there staring you right in the face. There can be no denying that Bermuda is in ruins, and only a select few are sitting pretty while many of their supporters have lights turned off, can’t pay their rent, children going to school without breakfast and no money for lunch, losing their homes or have no homes to go to, businesses closing left, right and centre, people losing their jobs. This is not a pretty picture, and they were promised so much. I drove down Front Street yesterday and it was like a ghost town, it was frightening.Every chance I get I talk to people and believe me, many are not happy with the way we have regressed, I am talking about the man in the street. People are frightened because they don’t know what is going to happen to them or to Bermuda next and it has come to the point where these people do not trust the Government because they feel they have been lied to and as far as the Government is concerned, it does not know the first thing about governing or what good governance is all about. People’s minds are changing, and some are beginning to see the light.Every day there seems to another occurrence that leaves a trail of unanswered questions. For example, the latest report by the Auditor General accusing Government on the using of public funds to the tune of $30,000 to hire a Canadian law firm for Dr Ewart Brown and Minister Derrick Burgess for a private defamation claim that should have been their own personal expense and here again if the Auditor General hadn’t brought this to our attention, we would never have known. What will it take to wake this whole Island up? How long do we have to suffer for the bad choice of having voted this Government in for the second and third time around? Shortly after being elected in 1998, the handwriting was on the wall, but the strategy of the PLP using the race card (the only weapon they have) got them back in the last two times, but that card is pretty worn out now so let’s see if they can win the next election on the “issues!”I see where Bob Richards, Shadow Minister of Finance, has challenged Premier Cox to a live debate, I wonder if she will take him up on his challenge?PAT FERGUSONWarwick
