Musicians unite for tsunami relief

The music of Handel, Bach Debussy and Vivaldi will echo throughout the Anglican Cathedral on Sunday, February 27 when some of the best and the brightest of Bermuda's musicians present a recital to aid the tsunami relief.

Under the distinguished patronage of Governor Sir John Vereker and Lady Vereker the concert features some 100 students from the Bermuda Suzuki Association and the Bermuda School of Music, plus a variety of well known local music personalities. The concert opens at 4 p.m.

"This is going to be a big one," said an organiser. "We will actually have more than 60 minutes of music. There could have been more, but we could not accommodate all the musicians who wanted to perform for this worthwhile occasion."

There is no admission, but a Retiring Offering will be taken for the Red Cross relief effort.

Some of the line-up includes the Suzuki Chamber Ensemble accompanied by Cynthia Gee in a four-minute rendition of "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba", F. Handel.

Choruses from "Judas Maccabeus", by F. Handel and the Hunters' Chorus, by CM von Weber are part of the musical fare, as are the voices of the Saltus trio, featuring Samantha Tavares, Madison Mello and Laura Fasulo.

Also featured are Peter Riihiluoma on the violin and Kerry Haslam, piano in "Concerto in G major, Allegro" by Haydn.

Other performers include Bermuda School of Music piano teachers, Olga Zeidel and Nick Curror and violin teachers Susan Moinester, Lisa Hollis and David France.

"We are very grateful to the Bishop of Bermuda for allowing us the use of the Cathedral as a venue for this concert," said the organiser.

"We are anticipating quite a turn-out as this is an excellent occasion for music lovers to enjoy their favourite classical music, whilst at the same time making a contribution to this worthwhile relief fund."
