Saltus win cup in 10-goal thriller

Saltus Grammar have been crowned schools soccer knockout cup champions after beating Berkeley Institute 6-4 in an entertaining over-16 final.

Saltus took the the lead late in the first half, Ziggy Stoneham slotting home from a Bascome free kick. And Jason Smith then made it 2-0 at the end of the half with a fine solo run which left the Berkeley ?keeper with no chance.

Berkeley coach Arnold Manders made some adjustments at half-time which produced immediate results, Ian Coke scoring from close range with barely a minute gone.

But Saltus didn?t take long to reply when Stoneham scored his second with an 18-yard effort.

Berkeley pulled another goal back when Jahron Dickinson drilled a thunderous free kick from 25 yards which somehow eluded the wall and the goalkeeper.

However, Bascome?s floated free kick was met with a Lozendro Symonds volley which restored the Saltus lead.

Berkeley never gave up and the forward pair of Coke and Shane Hollis began stretching the Saltus defence. Berkeley?s MVP Coke pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to go after the hard-working Hollis provided him with a cross at the back post.

Bascome was again the supplier for Saltus? fifth goal. His clearance upfield managed to elude the defence and Smith beat the ?keeper to the bouncing ball and rounded him before blasting into an empty net.

Saltus MVP Kijuan Wilkinson finished off any hopes Berkeley had of a comeback when he rose high above everyone to head home a Marquel Waldron corner.

Dickinson scored a consolation goal in injury time, firing past the ?keeper after a fine run down the left wing.

In the under-16 final, Berkeley staged an incredible fightback against CedarBridge to clinch the trophy via a penalty shoot-out after the teams had shared eight goals in regulation.

Berkeley found themselves 4-0 down in the first 15 minutes but managed to pull a goal back in the dying minutes of the first half through Ryan Tyrell.

Berkeley then put their opponents under constant pressure, although they were frequently let down by poor finishing with Tyrell the main culprit.

Reginald Thompson Lambe scored midway through the half when his corner eluded everyone and nestled in the far top right corner and then captain Jahkai Hill blasted a 30-yard effort to bring Berkeley within one.

Thompson Lambe completed the comeback with a fine effort five minutes from time.

In the ensuing shoot-out, both teams converted the first six rounds of penalties before CedarBridge finally had one saved by the Berkeley goalkeeper.

Dakkarri Smith then calmly slotted home Berkeley?s seventh to secure Berkeley?s third successive title.
