Swimmers vie for age group titles

who enjoyed success at the recent CCCAN championships in Cuba, will be at the BASA pool this weekend for the Summer National Age Group Championships.

Both of Bermuda's medallists in Havana, Stephen Fahy and Stephen Troake, will be back in action, although they face contrasting challenges.

Fahy, who won silver last week, competes in the new 18-21 age category which isn't expected to provide much competition, with only four swimmers entered -- the others being Alicia Mullan, Sara Mancell and Trevor Ferguson.

However, 17-year-old Troake, who grabbed bronze in Cuba, should have things his own way in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle but could face strong competition from Matthew Hammond and Ronald Cowen in the Individual Medley, backstroke and 400m freestyle.

Trevor Nelson. meanwhile, will be aiming to lower his short course time in the breaststroke after dropping two seconds off his personal best in Cuba.

Fifteen-year-old Paul Fox, who swam well in the freestyle events in Cuba, now faces fiercer competition as he moves up an age group to the 15-18 bracket.

In the boys 13-14 age group, Jimmy Pereira, Andrew Shaw and Graham Smith, who is recovering from a serious viral infection, should be the dominant swimmers, particularly with Jonathan Herring off the Island.

Fourteen-year old Jessica Marwick is expected to win the girls 13-14 year breaststroke, particularly as her main rival, Kim Frith, has now moved up an age group into the 15-18.

Young Triangle Club swimmers Melanie Fullerton, Sophie Jones and Stephen Kenney, who all recently qualified for the national squad, will be swimming in their age groups for the first time this season. Keira and Ashley Aitken are also two youngsters to watch.

Emma Rego of Dolphins will have strong competition from Lesley Smith in the girls 13-14 freestyle while another Dolphin, Rebecca Hanson, has returned from school in the UK as favourite in the 13-14 backstroke and IM.

The meet continues through today and tomorrow, starting at 9.30 a.m. and resuming at 5.30 p.m. each day.

STEPHEN TROAKE -- favourite in the 50 and 100 metres freestyle.
