Swimmers shine in US

Anastasia Lau, Scott Simmons, Ashley Aitken, Graham Smith, Ronald Cowen and Matthew Hammond all progressed through the morning heats.

In the 11-12 division, Lau went through to the 50 metres breaststroke final with the second fastest heat time of 37.12 seconds. Simmons advanced in the 13-14 division by placing sixth with a time of 1.20.20 in the 100m breaststroke.

Aitken reached the final of the 100m breaststroke in the girls' 13-14 division with a time of 1.25.37 while Smith enjoyed an excellent swim to reach the final of the 100m breaststroke in 1.11.77 in the 15-and-over division. He also swims in 200m individual medley final.

Both Cowen and Hammond reached the final in the 200m freestyle.

Heats today will see Stephen Troake, Hammond, Cowen, Trevor Ferguson, Andrew Shaw and Kiera Aitken all bidding for places in other event finals.

HOCKEY GIRLS ON A ROLL HOC Hockey girls on a roll Bermuda's teenage ladies hockey squad, currently in Vancouver, Canada, have enjoyed a triumphant start to their 13-game tour.

The 29 girls, divided into under-15 and under-17 teams, have scored victories in all four of their opening games against Vancouver youth sides.

The under-15s defeated Surrey Beagles 4-0 and Blue Sharks 2-0 while the under-17s beat Surrey Beagles 1-0 and Red Sharks 1-0.

Two more games were scheduled last night and another four this weekend.
