Sterritt added the National Championship crown to the points series title he had won a week earlier.

The top rider suffered a puncture midway through the race but ran with his bike for a quarter of a lap to get his spare wheel, and still easily beat the field.

Sterritt finished in a winning time of 1:15.01 in the 15-mile Open race. Some five minutes behind was Brian Steinhoff in 1:20.11, who waged a seesaw battle with points series rival Peter Matcham for the first five of seven laps.

However, Steinhoff managed to break away with just a lap and a half to go to secure second place with Matcham taking third in 1:22.39. This result meant that Matcham took second place overall in the points series with 188 points while Steinhoff tallied 167.

The closest race of the day -- and the season -- was in the 15-16 juniors where Chris Conway beat Nick Taylor by just 40 seconds. At the start of the day only four points separated first placed Taylor (186) and Conway (182) in the points series, so both the series and national championship titles were at stake. Taylor would have had to have finished no lower than second to ensure the series title while Conway had to win and have Taylor place third or lower to take the series.

Conway went out hard from the start, leaving Taylor caught in traffic early on. Taylor soon worked his way through to close in on Conway but had the added pressure of Trovaughan Smith trying to catch him for the second place spot.

Although Taylor got close to Conway, he had to settle for second place on the day. So he took the series title and left Conway with the championship title in a time of 54:56.

Smith held on for third in 57.27, 43 seconds ahead of Jean Nicholas Bertrand.

Smith's third place sealed him third in the series with 169 points.

Paulo Madeiros capped a fine season with another comfortable victory in the veterans' category, adding to his already-secured series title which he won with 200 points. Madeiros' time of 57.29 was over six minutes better than Ian Fox's time of 1:03.49.

Fox engaged in a fierce battle with Martin Bolton to take second place by just 20 seconds. Bolton's third place finish, however, assured him of second place in the series with 167 points, just three ahead of Fox on 164 points.

James Adams also completed a dominating season by adding the national championship title to his series title by winning the 13-14 category in an impressive time of 59.14 -- two minutes in front of early season favourite Matthew Herring.

Herring rode a strong race, too, finishing second in 1:01.23, over 10 minutes ahead of the next finisher, Geoffrey Smith. However, Smith's third place finish earned him second spot in the points series where he edged out Adam Petty by two points. Petty was unable to compete on Sunday.

In the novices category, Andre Bassett was hoping to achieve the points and championship double as well but Justin Simmons and Kevin Santucci had other ideas. After an hour's riding over tough terrain, the three riders all finished within three minutes of each other with Simmons winning in 1:00.35.

Bassett settled for second in 1:02.09 with Santucci another minute and a half back in 1:03.44. That result might have been a lot closer had Santucci not experienced mechanical problems early on.

Karen Madeiros in the women's and Ashley Robinson Roberts in the junior women's had uncontested wins but were able to take some pleasure from the fact that they were pressuring some of their male counterparts.

Madeiros' victory over seven laps of the short course came in a respectable time of 1:04.35, adding the championship to her series title. Robinson Roberts' win came in 1:14.06 and also capped off a two-title season.

Tim Fox completed the double in the 10 and under age group after finishing five minutes ahead of his main rival, Ricky Sousa.

Alex McManus had one of his better races of the season to take third, just 38 seconds behind Sousa.
