A man suffering from a delusional mental health disorder has been jailed for stabbing his ex-wife’s new partner.

Denis Davis repeatedly threatened Loren Belboda over several months before confronting him at his home in Devonshire and lunging at him with a knife.

Davis, 59, was jailed for two years and nine months at Supreme Court this week.

The court heard that Davis had divorced from his ex-wife, Penelope, in 1997 and their home on Cloverdale Road had been conveyed to Mrs Davis.

She then began a relationship with Mr Belboda in 2002 and the couple lived in the Devonshire property.

During the course of 2014 Davis had repeatedly turned up at his old home and threatened Mr Belboda, telling him to “get off my property”. Davis also threatened to kill Mr Belboda during a confrontation at the Port Royal gas station.

The ongoing dispute came to a head in April 2015 when Davis again turned up at his ex-wife’s home and threw bricks at Mr Belboda.

During the altercation Davis stabbed Mr Belboda in the upper right arm and the stomach before fleeing the scene.

Mr Belboda had to be treated in hospital, while Davis was picked up by police soon after the incident, claiming that Mr Belboda had attacked him and the property where his ex-wife lived was still his.

However, Davis later changed his story and admitted charges of wounding and stalking at Supreme Court.

Sentencing him to two years and nine months, Acting Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe said that he took into consideration that Davis was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the incident.

“I also have to consider the effect these offences have had on Mrs Davis and Mr Belboda. This sentence must give them a sense of justice that they will not have to go through this again,” he said.

Mr Justice Wolffe also imposed a three-year probation order on Davis when he is released. The terms of the order mean that he can not contact Mr Belboda or Mrs Davis or come within 100 metres of their residence or workplaces.
