Hectic summer ahead for local athletes

Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson is preparing herself for a busy summer with both junior and senior athletes set to compete in international competitions in the coming months. The list of events for local athletes include the Pan American Combined Events Cup, the National Track and Field Championship, CAC and World Junior Championships, and the Olympic Games in London. While some athletes have qualified for the international events, the National Championships present a chance for those who haven’t qualified as of yet to do so, while also interacting with the senior international athletes who return home for the meet. The Championships are set for June 15 and 16.“We are looking at turning this into a big event with all of our senior athletes overseas coming home to compete and also we will be bringing in some overseas athletes to compete against them,” said Watson.“This will make the championships, more exciting, make it worth the senior athletes while to come home and for some who haven’t reached the Olympic standard they may be able to reach it at this meet.“Also for our youth as their last chance to qualify for our Junior International meet and get some tips from the seniors.”Shianne Smith will be the sole competitor at the Pan Am Combined Events Cup in Ontario, Canada, in three weeks time, participating in the heptathlon, while the likes of juniors Kyle Webb, Bruce DeGrilla, Chas Smith, Dage Minors, Shuntae Hendrickson will compete at the CAC Junior Championships in El Salvador next month.Competing at the Junior Worlds in Barcelona, Spain, will be Jeneko Place, Kyle Webb, Scott Clarke, Bruce DeGrilla and Shaquille Dill, and the team going to the NACAC Under-23 event in Guanajuato, Mexico, includes Aaron Evans, Tre Houston, Jasmine Brunson, Henry Stevens-Carty, Tristan Joynes, Alison Outerbridge, and Ashley Berry.“We are hoping that Shianne can get a good competition in and get closer to the Olympic qualifying standard,” said Watson.“At this point and time we have 18 athletes who have reached the standard for the CACs are looking forward to around 20.“Fortunately for us some of our athletes who competed in the Under-20 division will be competing in the 17 and under age group which gives us an edge.“Therefore we are looking for some good results from CAC Juniors but we will be competing against the 26 countries who competed at Carifta plus the Spanish speaking countries in the Central American area.“Directly following the CAC Jnrs we have the World Junior Championships in July where we will be sending five athletes, Jeneko Place, Kyle Webb, Scott Clarke, Bruce DeGrilla and Shaquille Dill. We will also be competing in the 100m, 200m, 800m and the 4X100m relay.
