Shaun Goater made his first North Village appearance for 20 years but was unable to prevent his team from crashing out of the FA Cup against ten man Dandy Town.

With his team trailing at half time the Rams coach entered the fray and sparked an impressive second half performance that saw the hosts completely dominate Hornets, but fail to captilise on their plethora of scoring chances.

Village, who were beaten by Southampton Rangers in the Friendship Trophy last week, are now out of both remaining cup competitions and face their first season without silverware in recent memory.

Antwan Russell and Naki Wells had given Hornets a two-goal cushion at half-time and although Village bombarded the visitors at Bernard Park yesterday it took until the final kick of the match before they reduced the deficit through Sammy DeGraff.

Hornets' leading goalscorer Raymond Beach was sent off for foul and abusive language later on to make life even more difficult for Scott Morton's men.

Goater's old legs may not be able to get him around the pitch quite like he used to but in terms of his touch, vision and decision making he was still the most dangerous player on display as he rolled back the years for his boyhood club.

With the former Manchester City striker leading the attack, Village created a raft of goalscoring chances as Hornets retreated further and further into their half but were unable to find the early breakthrough they so desired.

Morton admitted he was a relieved coach after watching his side hold on to victory: "It was a game for two halves for us," said Morton.

"I thought we had more possession than them in the first half but I knew they would come out strong in the second. I didn't expect to see Shaun Goater come on and he certainly made a big difference for them. He has that experience and vision that the other players just don't have."

Hornets' opener saw the potent Beach turn provider, crossing for Russell who supplied the finish at the front post.

Their second was a piece of virtuoso brilliance from teenager Nahki Wells, once again outlining his promise by volleying a bouncing ball beyond a static Calvin Augustus in the Village goal.

Village continued to play some neat football with Ralph Bean crashing a shot onto the crossbar, while Beach should have put the game beyond doubt for Hornets on the stroke of half-time but saw his close range effort well saved by Augustus.

With the visitors forced to do the bulk of the defending after the break it seemed as though it would be a matter of time before Village edged themselves back into the game.

Kofi Dill and Sammy DeGraff both went close, while Goater twice forced Mikkail Crockwell into action.

Finally they got their just rewards when DeGraff hammered home Dill's pull-back with just seconds remaining.

Morton said his team showed plenty of character to keep their noses in front especially after seeing Beach receive his marching orders.

"We kept on hanging on there and it obviously got tougher when Beach was sent off. He said he didn't say anything to the referee but we'll have to wait for the match report," he said.
