You may have been in a taxi cab in Bermuda recently and noticed the driver using a touch screen Android device to communicate with his dispatcher. The company Island Taxi here in Bermuda has recently implemented a mobile to mobile (M2M) business solution that allows them to dispatch in real time and track their cabs across the island using Global Positioning System technology on CellOne’s 4G data network. The application they are using is called Logistrics Taxi and it’s one of many M2M data solutions that have gained popularity recently in the marketplace. Mobile to Mobile data solutions can range from fleet and asset management tracking for companies like Island Taxi to smart metering for the local power company where mobile devices send information back to headquarters for tracking and management purposes.Fleet management applications like the one Island Taxi is using can be used to lower costs through efficiency and enhanced security. When used in conjunction with satellite-based GPS (Global Positioning System) units and LBS (Location Based Services), they make it possible to pinpoint real-time vehicle location, monitor freight and keep drivers secure. In the US, Verizon claims it is the biggest M2M connector with over seven million connections and counting. Their connections range from mobile healthcare products to wireless financial services and even include things like vending machines.Although relatively new in Bermuda, we see M2M connections as a potential for growth here in the next couple of years. Taxi companies, banks, public transport and many more companies and organisations have the opportunity to make their products and services more mobile over the coming years to not only track and manage assets, but attract more business Island-wide.The cost effective nature of M2M business solutions offer additional growth potential. With these hosted web solutions, the upfront purchase of software and the management of internal systems are not required. Your only expense would be a low monthly subscription fee.CellOne has a variety of these wireless solutions available and have signed exclusive distributorship rights in Bermuda with a company called Little Services Gateway that provide numerous M2M solutions.Rob McNabb is CellOne’s director of marketing
