General contracting company Bermudatech Limited, in consultation with architectural firm OBM Architects and Designers, is proposing a new private sector initiative which will see a bridge built where the former railway bridge stood.

Details of the plan for Flatts Inlet Crossing will be revealed today at 3 p.m.

when the parties are set to hold a press conference at Palmetto Hotel.

The idea of a bridge spanning the inlet to allow traffic to continue east or west without passing through Flatts Village is not a new one as a 1983 Government report suggested the idea.

The Planning Department report -- entitled the Flatts Village Special Study -- contained plans to boost the area as a tourist site and deal with the serious traffic problem in the area which made pedestrian travel dangerous.

It stemmed from the 1974 Development Plan which highlighted the village as an area of outstanding scenic beauty which needed to be preserved and suggested a bridge across the inlet to redirect traffic and prevent bottlenecks in the village.
