Breaking News - World Cup Draw

Bermuda could be on a collision course to face Concacaf powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago in next year’s 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The Island’s senior national squad were pitted against Group 1C rivals Cayman Islands during today’s World Cup draw held in Durban, South Africa, with the eventual winner from the February home and away series advancing to meet 2006 World Cup debutants Trinidad - only the second Concacaf team to appear in football's premier showpiece.

Moments after learning of the Island’s first round opponents, an optimistic Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden stated: “The BFA will be quite optimistic with the first round draw but wary not to take anything for granted.

“I am confident newly appointed national coach Keith Tucker will put together the strongest possible team, one that will be capable of beating both Cayman Island and Trinidad.”

Mussenden said he is confident Bermuda can get past Cayman Island to set up a showdown with the now famous ‘Soca Warriors’.

He added: “We know Trinidad are a different calibre team having already made it to the World Cup. As a member of the Concacaf region it’s going to be a good battle, but one that we are confident we can overcome.”

Under the sterwardship of Kenny Thompson, Bermuda failed to to advance to the second round of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers after bowing out against El Salvador at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
