Around the Bermuda Courts

A 54-year old man stands accused of seriously sexually assaulting a 52-year-old woman while armed with a knife and depriving her of her liberty.

The man also faces charges of stealing $60 from the same victim while armed with a knife during an alleged aggravated burglary and robbing her of $1,060, also while armed.

All of the charges relate to an alleged incident on November 11. Neither the defendant nor the victim can be named for legal reasons.

The man was not required to enter a plea when he appeared at Magistrates' Court yesterday morning.

His lawyer, Larry Scott, did not apply for bail. Mr. Scott told the court he would like the case to progress to Supreme Court at the earliest opportunity.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded the defendant into custody, ordering him to appear before the court again on December 4.

US visitor target of alleged robbery

A 38-year-old Pembroke man has appeared in court charged with robbing an American visitor in Woodbourne Avenue, Pembroke, during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Jeffrey Charles Butterfield, of West Park Lane, Pembroke, pleaded not guilty to the accusation that he used force against Angelo Antonio Castillo on November 19 and took his wallet valued at $30.

Butterfield was bailed for $2,000 and ordered to reappear for trial at the Magistrates' Court on February 5 at 9.30 a.m.

March date set for theft trial

A Sandys man accused of stealing just over $15,000 from the Bank of Butterfield has reappeared at Magistrates' Court and been bailed to return for trial in March.

Charles Blake Simmons has been accused of 14 charges, including six of stealing a total of $15,380 between April and May this year. The other charges relate to stealing bank debit cards.

Simmons, 35, of Gatehouse Lane, Sandys, has denied all the charges and has had his $5,000 bail extended until his trial date on March 2 next year at 9.30 a.m. He has also had to surrender his passport.

Thief hid steaks down his pants

A meat thief was fined for shoplifting after stuffing three steaks down his pants.

Magistrates' Court heard surveillance cameras at Arnold's Family Market in St. John's Road caught 43-year-old Raymond Robinson in the act on November 11.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said the defendant, of Deepdale Lane, Pembroke, hid $35-worth of steak on his person before leaving the store without paying. Robinson, a labourer at Sunrise Construction, pleaded guilty to theft.

Observing that he had previous convictions for stealing a rack of lamb last year and twice stealing T-bone steaks in 2004, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told him yesterday: "You like good meat!"

He fined Robinson $500, with 30 days in prison as punishment for non-payment.
