Already planned are a five kilometre walk, followed by a day of entertainment and speeches at the National Stadium on Saturday, February 5.

And organisers are hoping that thousands will respond by wearing T-shirts with the message "Living Clean, Living Free''.

The event has been organised by the Bermuda Inter-service Community Awareness Day Committee, involving Police, US Customs and Immigration, Bermuda Customs and Immigration, the National Drug Commission, the Fire Service, the Prison Service, the US Air Station and a representative of airlines serving the Island.

Most of the groups involved are directly involved in the fight against drugs in Bermuda. If it proves a success a similar day could be held for other purposes.

Chairman Police Sgt. John Dale said: "We, like many organisations, see the need to gain the full community support in the war against drugs.'' The big day at the National Stadium will involve local celebrities, speakers and overseas entertainers.

T-shirts will go on sale early to give people an opportunity to wear them on the day, or to spread the message before.

Sgt. Dale added: "It is not a fund-raising event. We are not trying to drag money out of people.

"We see this as being a big day for Bermuda. People from all walks of life, young and not so young, will gather in order to express their support in the war against drugs. This will hopefully help to eradicate the problem.'' The committee is inviting other organisations to give their support and refreshments are expected to be provided by a number of groups, presently being approached by one committee member.

Already pledging their support are comedian Bootsie, Tony Brannon's soca band and His & Hers, from Gina Spence Productions.

National Drug Commission representative Mr. Michael Stowe said: "This is consistent with our philosophy. The whole community in Bermuda is concerned about the drug problem.

"They have demonstrated their support in public spirited ways. This is an opportunity for everyone to come together.''
