Four decades on, Navy buddies go back to sea
they took part in the Marion-Bermuda Crusing Yacht Race.
Mr. George C. Crocker, Mr. Jim Martineau, Mr. John Collar and Mr. Hugh Van Brimer sailed into Bermuda on the yacht Remora VIII .
The previous time they were at sea together was on the USS Douglas H. Fox at the close of the Korean War in 1954.
Lawyer Mr. Martineau, of Minneapolis, who was communications officer on the destroyer, said: "There was a big reunion last year in Charlotte, South Carolina. About 1 a.m. in the morning George suggested that we take part in the race on his yacht.'' Mr. Crocker, of Barrington, Rhode Island, has taken part in the race eight times while Mr. Van Brimer, of Southberry, Connecticut, last entered six years ago.
But for Mr. Martineau and property manager Mr. Collar, of Austell, Georgia, both relatively inexperienced, it was a first.
Mr. Collar said: "We had a four-man crew of younger men who are all experienced.
"But really it was exciting. It was like being on a roller coaster and only going down.'' Remora VIII arrived 48th out of 122 boats and sixth in its class. The crew will spend a couple more days in Bermuda before setting off home to the United States.
SHIPMATES AGAIN -- Mr. Jim Martineau and Mr. John Collar on board the yacht Remora VIII . The two others were playing golf.
