Lewis denies kicking victim as he lay on the ground

Murder-accused Kellan Lewis stabbed and punched victim Kellon Hill, then kicked him as he lay on the ground, a prosecutor alleged.

Lewis's friends also participated in the attack, wielding a screwdriver, a helmet and a cane, according to Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field.

Lewis denied the allegations. However, he was then accused by Mr. Field of giving conflicting answers to questions and lying to cover up the role he and his friends allegedly played in the killing.

The exchange came as Mr. Field cross-examined Lewis on evidence he gave in his own defence on Wednesday. Lewis admitted then that he got into a fight with Mr. Hill the night the 18-year-old was stabbed to death leaving a party at Elbow Beach in August 2008.

He said he tried to pull Mr. Hill off his bike and later punched him twice after he'd been set upon by an unknown group. He said the group fight moved away from him up the hill leading to Elbow Beach, then back down it towards him again, at which point he punched Mr. Hill twice. However, Lewis denied stabbing Mr. Hill, and possessing a knife.

Quizzed by Mr. Field yesterday, he denied seeing his friend Kevin Warner hit Mr. Hill with a walking cane, his friend Gary Hollis hit him with a bike helmet and his friend Zharrin Simmons stab him with a screwdriver.

However, Mr. Field alleged: "I suggest he [Warner] was in the group with you, Gary, Zharrin, Devon, when you attacked Kellon Hill. The five of you including Kevin attacked Mr. Hill."

"Can you repeat that?" asked Lewis.

Mr. Field did so.

"Maybe he was," replied Lewis.

Pointing out that Lewis previously denied being involved in a group attack on the victim with his friends, Mr. Field responded: "I don't want to mislead, but are you now accepting that you did do an attack on Kellon Hill together with those other four?"

Lewis replied: "I don't accept that, but I did assault Kellon. I did hit him."

Mr. Field pressed: "But are you accepting that those other four were in the group you described as attacking Kellon Hill. The group that moved up and down towards you, which you described in your evidence."

"Right," replied Lewis.

"Are you accepting that?" asked the prosecutor.

"I didn't see anybody," replied Lewis.

"But you just said 'right'," pointed out Mr. Field.

"I was saying 'right' to what you said. I didn't see anybody," repeated Lewis.

However, putting the accounts of prosecution witnesses to the accused, Mr. Field said: "I suggest you stabbed him with a knife. And you continued to harry him, attack him, punch him. You went all the way up [the hill] and your friend Gary is hitting him with a helmet as well."

"No, that's not true," said Lewis.

But the prosecutor went on to allege: "And you, not satisfied with the fact that he falls down, having stabbed him he falls down, and you started kicking him on the ground."

"No, that's not true," repeated Lewis.

"And you must have known he was in a really bad way, but you continued to attack him," said Mr. Field.

"Not true," repeated Lewis, who denied seeing Simmons stab Hill with a screwdriver at that point.

The case continues.
