Tennis administrator's daughter to face disciplinary action

The daughter of the Island?s top tennis administrator is facing disciplinary action after handing her opponent a 6-0, 6-0 Argus Open semi-final victory.

Jacklyn Lambert, 15, daughter of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president David, failed to return serves or play strokes in her defeat to Ashley Brooks at the W.E.R Joell Stadium on Thursday and served 18 double faults in the ?contest?.

During the 31 minute match, Lambert only won three points against the top seed ? although was given 11 by a confused Brooks ? in an embarrassing display of poor sportsmanship.

Tournament referee Allan Simmons has submitted a report to the BLTA over the incident, in which Lambert also abused the crowd, shouting ?shut up? on at least one occasion to the gathered spectators.

Simmons confirmed he was made aware of the ongoing problem in the game ? which had no chair umpire ? and witnessed some of the shenanigans which made a mockery of the latter stages of one of the Island?s premier domestic tournaments.

He explained that a player can only withdraw from a game due to personal emergency or sickness. He added that a player could be thrown out of a tournament for verbal abuse, ball abuse, racquet abuse or bad sportsmanship ? although he confirmed that Lambert was allowed to continue in the competition.

The report will be discussed by the tournament committee before being forwarded to the BLTA. The sport?s governing body could then censure Lambert by letter or even suspend her.

Simmons said that players had been suspended for up to a year in the past for verbal abuse, although he had no recollection of a player ever being disciplined ? or reported ? for throwing away a game. Russian former top ten player Marat Safin was fined $2,000 for ?tanking? ? throwing away his match ? in the first round of the Australian Open.

Simmons declined to comment further on the details of the incident, stating that he would be putting it all in his report.

Bizarrely Lambert, who had shown signs of a lack of discipline when abusing the umpire in the Island Construction Open Ladies ?B? semi-final, went on to play ?properly? in her mixed doubles game later in the day when she and James Collieson played Lavern Stowe and Jenson Bascome, losing 6-2, 6-3.
