Cash was stolen from most of the places hit, including private residences, business premises and guest accommodations.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Roseanda Jones said visitors staying at a guest resort on South Road in Warwick woke early Saturday morning to find an intruder in their room.

The intruder made off with a wallet and a handbag containing more than $2,500 in cash and other personal items, she said.

Thieves also made off with a substantial amount of cash, liquor and cigarettes from a business in Spanish Point between Friday night and Saturday morning.

GARDEN CLUB GIVES STUDENTS A BOOST AWD Three students have been given awards by the Garden Club of Bermuda to boost their career prospects.

They are Mr. Carlos Amaral, Miss Claire Louise Jessey, and Mr. Sheldon Corey Robinson.

Mr. Amaral, of Devonshire, will continue a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture at the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology in Cobleskill, New York.

Miss Jessey is in her final year of a biology degree course at Dalhousie University.

She hopes to take a graduate course in the United Kingdom, specialising in entomology.

Miss Jessey has been working for the Department of Agriculture, Parks and Fisheries.

Mr. Robinson, from Sandys, is finishing a degree course in Horticulture at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia.

The Garden Club will also continue partially sponsoring Ms Dawn Santucci, of Smith's Parish.

She will be returning to Abraham Baldwin to complete her science degree.

SIX CAUGHT SHOPLIFTING OVER WEEKEND CRM Six people were caught shoplifting at various places over the weekend.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Roseanda Jones said it was encouraging to note they were all detained by staff until Police arrived.

AUTHORITIES STILL LOOKING FOR JUVENILE POL Only one of four juveniles reported missing last Friday remains to be found.

Shawn Even, who has been missing from a Government home since September 28, is believed to be in the Middle Town and Court Street area where he frequents.

Anyone knowing of his whereabouts is asked to contact Police immediately.

RENOVATIONS AT HOME FOR CHILDREN HM The Sunshine League children's home has closed down for extensive renovations and will not reopen before next year.

There were only six children placed at the foster home, a 70-year-old residence on King Street in Hamilton.

Alternative homes were found for all of them, League President Mrs. Lyn Tucker said.

The home had a low-key closing last month, but a fundraising blitz was planned for this month, she said.

She was not in a position to disclose the amount of money being spent on renovating the home, saying only it was thousands of dollars.

"It needed substantial repairs,'' she said. "It was termite-ridden. We are renovating everything -- the ceilings and the floors.'' The Gilbert and Sullivan Society had wanted to present a cheque to the League this month but had been unable to get hold of anyone at the home after making repeated attempts.

But Mrs. Tucker said she had since spoken to the Society and a League voice mail service was now in place for future callers.

The League is privately run but receives a grant from Government.

At one time as many as 35 children had been staying at the home.
