Police St. George's push for four straight
determine the early pacesetters as top pair Police and St. George's bid to build on their good starts to the season.
The pair are the only teams in the league with perfect records from their two matches. And while Police have a good chance of extending their run against Somerset today and Flatts tomorrow, St. George's will have to dig deep into their reserves against Southampton Rangers and Willow Cuts.
The east enders have yet to field their strongest team, and their teams today and tomorrow could be their weakest so far as four of their key players are off the island, Clay Smith, Dean Minors and Gregory Foggo who are spending the summer in England and Dexter Smith who is still on vacation. Clevie Wade, who has been missing so far because of a leg injury, is named in the team as is youngster Troy Hall.
Flatts, however, are determined not to be pushovers tomorrow. They had their confidence boosted last weekend with an impressive victory over Cleveland last weekend after Cleveland declared. That could set the trend for a new attitude from Flatts who will again rely on Troy Dean and Rodney Woolridge to lead them in the batting.
Today's top match should be between Willow Cuts and Western Stars at Somerset while Eastern Counties rivals Bailey's Bay and Cleveland will clash at Sea Breeze Oval in another interesting match.
Both teams will also be looking for good performances in their buildup to their Camel Cup matches next weekend when champions Bay meet Devonshire and Cleveland make their debut in the competition against St. George's.
Bay are third in the league standings with a win and a draw from their two matches and they will be looking to remain in the top three after this weekend which also involves a match against Somerset Bridge.
In other action today Social Club will take on Warwick, Devonshire Rec. will meet a PHC team that is hoping to have Perry Maybury and James Pace in action this weekend. Tomorrow PHC take on Cleveland.
In today's other matches St. David's are at home to Nationals in a match that could go either way while Bridge meet Flatts at White Hill field, provided their field is ready for action for the first time.
Indications are it may not be as internal problems between the groundsman and members of the club's executive have resulting in the field lying unattended until earlier this week.
Bridge president Kenny Simmons could not be reached for comment on the matter yesterday.
Meanwhile, new Western Stars signing Albert Steede, who struck 93 last weekend against Southampton Rangers, meets his former Devonshire Rec. team at St.
John's field in one of the day's top contests. Stars bounced back from their opening day loss to St. George's with a huge 148-run win over Rangers who also now have a one win, one loss record from their two matches.
Tomorrow Rangers are at home for the second time this weekend, this time against Nationals while the other matches in the west end see Somerset taking on Social Club and Somerset Bridge hosting the league champions, Bailey's Bay.
For the last time this season league matches will begin at 11.00, switching back to a noon start on May 20 after a break for Camel Cup and the visit by the Australians.
