Freedom is a treasure
January 27, 2011Dear Sir,I too am incensed by Mr Paynter's letter. What is wrong with you being alive and free to state your case without being dragged from your bed in the middle of the night, interrogated and never to be seen again? How do you think you have that freedom? It is because men have given their lives to protect your freedom to be able to say what you want without intimidation. Did they all die in vain? You must surely now know the answer to that! Men give their lives in war, not because they want to but because they realise that evil has to be stopped and eliminated, so they do it, they go because it is the right thing to do. Proud and willing to go, so that we can all sleep in our beds without fear. The wonderful letter in my paper today by Ronald Arthur Slater of the USA who served away from his homeland here in Bermuda, with all the hardships he describes, knew why he was there, to serve his country; and as dreadful as the outcome would have been, had he not stood firm against that evil force like thousands upon thousands did, Mr Paynter would not be here to tell his tale, as he would be under the boot of Germany. I hope Mr Paynter considers his freedom as a treasure that many don't have, and be grateful, grateful to the men like Mr. Slater and to my fiance who lost his life in serving his country.DIANA WILLIAMSPembroke
