Gov't gets some input on a Warwick community centre
a community and cultural centre.
New Youth and Sport Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon pledged support in return for commitment. "The Government is prepared to work as your partner,'' she said.
But she warned of tax increases should Government be asked to pick up the bill.
Sen. Gordon spoke yesterday to little over 30 people at a public meeting on the community centre proposal.
Support for a centre was overwhelming -- although some urged better use of existing facilities.
The idea has been put forward by Mr. Sinclair Furbert, ex-president of Pembroke Community Centre.
Among the audience at Warwick Secondary School was Education Minister the Hon.
Gerald Simons.
Mr. Furbert stressed the need for a centre to boost prospects for local youngsters.
Among ideas raised by the audience for a centre were an adult and children day care centre; after school programme; employment service, and counselling centre.
Afterward, Mr. Furbert said he was encouraged by the positive reaction, and planned more meetings.
A list of names for a provisional steering committee would also be pencilled in, he added.
