Seniors star Thorpe to play in local event

Champions Tour star and former PGA Tour winner Jim Thorpe will be the guest player at the inaugural Sir John Plowman Golf Classic to be held in Bermuda later this year.

Thorpe, who has already won twice on Tour this year ? at the Farmers Charity Classic in June and the Commerce Bank Long Island Classic in July ? and is ranked seventh on this year's Champions Tour money list with more than $875,000 in winnings, is expected to play at least one hole with all of the teams who sign up for the November 26 tournament.

Aimed at raising funds for the charity Project Action, the Plowman Classic will be played under a four-ball, better-ball format with two shotguns starts ? at Belmont Hills in the morning and Riddell's Bay in the afternoon.

Local companies and individuals are being invited to form their own four-player teams with the entry fee set at $210 per player.

Sir John Plowman, a former Transport Minister and Government leader in the Senate, was a keen golfer who played at Port Royal for many years. He passed away last year.

Former Bermuda professional golfer Anthony Mocklow, who regained his amateur status, is enjoying more success in England where he now resides.

Mocklow, who lives in Surrey, has qualified for two of the country's major amateur events ? the British Mid Amateur to be held at Hoylake ? British Open venue ? from August 11-15 and the English Mid Amateur to be played at Fairhaven Golf Club in Liverpool from August 20-22.

Last month Mocklow made it through the first qualifying stage for the British Open at Troon but was eliminated at a second tournament in Glasgow.
