TCD error leads to young woman being listed in the current draft
It's normal to see a long, long list of names letting the young men of the Country know if they are required for Regiment duty.
It's a bit unusual to see a woman's name there.
But that is exactly what happened to a rather shocked Honor Brady a University College London student, currently on exchange in Hong Kong.
According to her mom Rebecca Zuill, the mix-up may have been caused by a fault on Honor's driver's licence, which lists her as being male.
Mrs. Zuill said: "Our eldest daughter Zoe popped her head around our bedroom door and said 'I have some very bad news about Honor. She has been drafted' and she of course cracked a smile.
"It took a few minutes for the information to register because it was so unexpected."
She said the civil engineering student "would be quite useful to the army" and added: "We certainly aren't upset by it. It has been a light hearted experience for us and we have enjoyed teasing Honor."
Acting Public Relations Officer Captain Chris Gauntlett said errors such as this were rare within the Bermuda Regiment. He did recall the system once listing that a recruit had been born in 1881 and was still alive. "So we occasionally get those ones."
Cpt Gauntlett said new recruits were selected based on a random draw from Government's computer system. If there was an error within the Transport Control Department records that would impact the selection process, he said.
"We definitely had a light hearted reaction. It is unfortunate but if that is what was in the system there is no way for us to know any different," he added.
The enlistment letters are ready to be sent out, however Honor's will be pulled out of the list and Cpt. Gauntlett added: "She is welcome to come if she wants to volunteer, but she is not required."
Meanwhile hundreds of other male recruits will be expected to start their paper work process, known as Enlist and Attestation, from October 4 to 6.
And no doubt it will take Private Brady a little while to get over her new nickname.
