Police officially name car crash victim
The Bermuda Police Service has now confirmed the death of Winston Burrows in a road accident last Sunday.
The official confirmation follows an autopsy by an overseas forensic pathologist.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: "Mr. Burrows died when the car he was driving burst into flames following a collision with a truck around 1.30 a.m. Sunday, April 5, on South Road in Warwick near the junction with Dunscombe Road.
"The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased."
The 44-year-old's death is the fifth road fatality this year.
A British guest worker has been charged with causing Mr. Burrows' death while his ability to drive was impaired. Luke Armstrong, 24, is also accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Mr. Burrows' passenger Evelyn Rewan, who was seriously injured.
He faces further charges of causing actual bodily harm to Mr. Burrows' backseat passenger Honest Masawi and to his own passenger, visitor Peter Mumby. Mr. Armstrong is also accused of failing to stop and report the accident, and not having a valid licence.
Police were hoping high visibility patrols would deter motorists from drink-driving over the Easter holiday weekend.
Roadside patrols were stationed across the Island and at various public events.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: "The Bermuda Police Service is encouraging members of the public to enjoy themselves responsibly.
"If you are planning to drink, don't drive; use a designated driver or public transportation/taxis to make sure you arrive at your intended destination safely."
