Others who served

Apart from Mr. Farmer, Mr. Firth and Mr. Smith, a number of other Bermudians were involved in the Normandy Landings:

Major ? later Major General ? Glyn Gilbert landed with the Second Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in the 3rd Division on the Normandy Beaches on D-Day. He would fight with the battalion from Caen to the Baltic when peace was declared 11 months later.

In September, 1944 he was awarded the Military Cross for courage under fire at the Escaut Canal in Belgium. Maj. Gen. Gilbert died on September 26, 2004.

Fl. Lt. Edward Graham (Teddy) Nicholl DFC, who won a Distinguished Flying Cross during his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force in North Africa, flew a reconnaissance Spitfire covering the D-Day Normandy landings, one sortie being with a higher reconnaissance unit.

Sgt. Robert (Robbie) Zuill, flew as a wireless operator/gunner in bombers in missions over the North Sea, Europe and Berlin and the D-Day Normandy landings. Sgt. T.J. Wadson, who flew with the RCAF, was also in Bomber Command and flew at D-Day.

Major William (Bill) Wilson, later a chief general manager of the Bank of Bermuda, served in the Royal Canadian Field Artillery and landed on the Normandy Beaches on June 6.

According to the Bermuda Maritime Museum, many Bermudians played an active role in the campaign in Northern Europe following D-Day.

The following Bermudians, all with the Lincolnshire Regiment, lost their lives during the campaign through France, Belgium and Holland in the summer and autumn of 1944. Those who died on October 14, were killed at Overloon-Venrai, the first major engagement for the Fourth Battalion of the Lincolnshires, in which many Bermudians served:
