Cigar shop opens in St. George's
has chosen the entrepreneurial road.
He recently opened Churchill's, which sells spirits and cigars.
Located at 27 York Street in St. George's, the new shop includes a humidor to protect the cigars from heat and humidity.
"An amazing amount of tourists are looking for cigars and interest is growing among locals as well,'' he said.
"A good cigar will range from $3 to $10 while Castro's cigar -- Cohiba -- cost $36 each,'' Mr. Davis said.
The shop carries cigars from the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Cuba.
To protect the product, Mr. Davis has built a humidor in the shop. The room provides the product with a constant temperature and humidity preventing cigars from drying out or from getting too damp.
The proliferation of cigar bars in Boston and New York, complete with air purification systems, are evidence that people consider a good cigar as one of the finer things in life, he said.
Mr. Davis also said celebrities have helped generate the recent immense popularity of cigar smoking.
Recent covers of Cigar Aficionado, the magazine published by Marvin Shankin who also publishes Wine Spectator, have featured actors Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger as well as super model Linda Evangelista, all with cigar in hand.
Prior to opening the spirits and cigar store, Mr. Davis managed the Corner Wine Shop on Harbour Road. He also was wine manager at Burrows Lightbourn Ltd.'s head office. And prior to that he was with Bristol Cellar Ltd.
He estimated it took $75,000 to open Churchill's, located in the former Frith's location.
In connection with the new shop, Mr. Davis and his son James who co-owns the business, set up a limited liability company, AFC Ltd.
