Ming to return to Fulham
Fulham FC are monitoring the progress of gifted midfielder Tre Ming who is to return to the Premier League club for a second trial.
Ming, 14, attended tryouts with Fulham along with fellow Bermudian Zeiko Lewis on the recommendation of Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley last October.
And yesterday Government presented the BFA with $3,364 to cover the costs of sending PHC youngster Ming along with a senior national coach to Fulham later this year.
Realistically Ming, who has also had trials at Portsmouth, would be unable to sign scholarship terms until he turns 17, but Broadley is confident he has the ability to follow in the footsteps of Clyde Best and Shaun Goater.
"Fulham want another look at Tre and so the BFA applied for a Government grant to help cover the costs of getting him out there," said Broadley.
"It's important to remember that Tre is still very young and this is not a trial as such.
"The earliest Fulham could realistically sign him would be on his 17th birthday and hopefully they will continue to monitor him over the next few years.
"Reggie Lambe signed for Ipswich Town as first year academy student, so he's really set the model for talented young Bermuda players."
Former Crystal Palace academy director Broadley has strong ties with Fulham and took the senior national team to the club's training ground for a week-long workout last year.
Fulham goalkeeper coach Vic Bettinelli has also worked with Bermuda's national team during their World Cup and Digicel Cup qualifying campaigns – and Broadley is keen to further the BFA's relationship with the Premier League powerhouse.
"Last time Tre and Zeiko went it was done through me as I have a lot of contacts at Fulham.
"But now I want to make this official and further our relationship with Fulham," he said.
"I think it's important either me or youth director Devar Boyles accompany Tre.
"Not only is this a great chance for Tre but it gives us access to Fulham's training methods and coaching material."
n Meanwhile, Bermuda Under-18s trip to Guadeloupe for an international tournament has been postponed due to safety concerns.
Riots took place on the French Caribbean Island recently over high prices and low wages.
Bermuda were to head to Guadeloupe next month to take on academies from French top-flight clubs Olympic Marseille, Nancy, Caen as well as Barbados, Haiti, French Guyana and the hosts.
