Family-run bakery opens in Old Town

A new Old Town business aims to serve up international breakfasts and home-made baked goods.Kamilah Cannonier this week opened family-run Sweet SAAK Bakery alongside the new CV Cafe, next to Conscious Vibes on York Street/Water Street.SAAK is an acronym for the family, sisters Shre, brothers Angelo and Ankoma and Kamilah. Her aunt Ela is also involved.Ms Cannonier has been selling her baked goods from home, and decided to take the “step up” and “be part of the revitalisation of St George’s” by opening a bakery.Sweet SAAK is open 8.30am to 1.30pm and sells daily breakfast specials and a selection of homemade baked goods.This week’s breakfasts included Southern-style biscuits and sausage gravy, English-style baked beans on fresh-baked toast, waffles, Brioche French toast, and old-fashioned oatmeal.Her baked goods include delicious chocolate chunk, oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, sugar, ginger and peanut butter cookies, plus fudge brownies, cupcakes, gingerbread, banana bread, muffins, and plain, cheese, raisin and orange ginger scones.Ms Cannonier, who is from St David’s, said the family is known for its speciality cakes, especially coconut cake.They also bake pumpkin spice, lemon, and sweet potato cakes.She said she is still baking her goods from home but hopes to eventually bake on site.Sweet SAAK shares space with the CV Cafe, owned by Michelle Wales. The cafe opened this summer and offers everything from Fair Trade coffee and tea, to speciality drinks and Bailey’s ice cream.
