Swallows off to fast start

ladies hockey season on the weekend which saw new club Swallows mark their entry into Bermuda Ladies Hockey Association with a 2-0 victory over Swifts in the B League.

In the A League Canaries crushed Cardinals 3-0 and Orioles edged Bluebirds 3-2 while other B games saw Canaries defeat Cardinals 2-0 and Bluebirds nip Orioles 1-0.

Karen Turner netted Swallows' historic first league goal in the first half and despite fine play from Swifts 'keeper Julie Oatley and defender Lisete Moniz, the B league newcomers rounded off their victory with a second strike from Denise Downey after the break.

However, it was Orioles' Maryellen Jackson who stole the weekend spotlight as she cracked all three goals in Orioles' 3-2 A league victory over Bluebirds.

Jackson gave Orioles an early lead only for Candy Lee Foggo to hit back minutes later. But it was Jackson who netted again to give Orioles a 2-1 half-time lead. And she completed her hat-trick after the interval.

Ailsa Campbell netted a second for Bluebirds but it proved too little too late.

Emma Garon was also quick to find her scoring touch as she netted two goals in the space of a few minutes as Canaries got off to a fast start against Cardinals in the A league.

Helen Farrington put the result beyond doubt with a third strike 15 minutes into the second half.

In the B league match between the same sides, Ali Cameron struck twice to give Canaries a 2-0 win while Ingrid McKenna scored the all-important goal as Bluebirds edged Orioles 1-0.

BLHA umpires were put under scrutiny over the weekend as Richard Kentwell, a visiting umpiring assessor from the International Hockey Federation visited the Island.

His visit was jointly organised by the BLHA and Bermuda Hockey Association as part of their continuing commitment to improving the sport. The two associations are scheduled to merge early next year.
