Peter Bromby is leading the Bacardi Cup at the half-way stage.

Three successive top-ten finishes have given the Bermudian sailor a five-point lead over hometown rival George Szabo of the USA ahead of the last three races in Miami, Florida.

Bromby finished ninth on Monday and recorded a fourth yesterday, following his sixth place in Sunday's opening race. This gives him 19 points to Szabo's 24. Overnight leader and world champion Iain Percy of the UK is now third on 28.

"Two top fives (finishes) from hereon I think would win it for us so we've just got to keep hammering away," a buoyant Bromby told The Royal Gazette last night.

"That's our goal - just to keep in the top five, if not (then in) the top ten."

Despite an ordinary start yesterday, Bromby and crew, Martin Siese, diligently worked through the 112-strong fleet to be among the leaders at the end.

"Today the breeze was up and we were quite happy with our performance because we didn't have the best start. We just nibbled away at the leaders and got ourselves back into contention in the race.

"When we got around the first mark we were about 15th and we just worked our way through the fleet and managed to get out with a fourth."

Sailing out of Coral Reef Yacht Club, the 38-year-old attributed his success thus far to good teamwork and a fabulous new boat.

"We've been getting off the line great and Martin has been doing a great job. Consequently, we've had some good races.

"We have this new boat that we've had since the World Championships (last year) and we're really happy with the way it's going."

The Bacardi Cup continues today with one race daily until it concludes on Friday.
