Sports Shorts: All Stars win

Bermuda Allstars retained their title International Cup title in New Jersey recently beating St. Agness-St. Paul by 98 runs at Orange Park in East Orange. with the scores Bermuda Allstars 277-9, St. Agness-St. Paul 179.

The locals, managed by former Hamilton Parish skipper medium pacer Leroy (Peter) Trott, raced to their formidable total with Reggie Williams ? a Bermudian living in Jersey ? top scorer on 66, skipper Vivian Simons followed on 58 while Chris Smith scored 34, Perry Simmons 27 and Noel Gibbons 24.

The home side couldn?t prevent the Bermudians from recording their third successive triumph and were bundled out before reaching the double century mark.

R.Ross was top bat for the Americans with 51 while A.Gang followed on 32.

Ricky Hill was the top local bowler with two wickets for 17 off eight overs with a maiden while Noel Gibbons had two for 24 off five overs. Chris Caisey claimed two for 36 off eight overs and Perry Simmons two for 40 off seven overs.

?It was quite an enjoyable contest this year, but our boys pulled us through to yet another victory. It now means that we have brushed aside the Americans three straight times and of course now we will be aiming to make it four next year,? said manager Trott.

?Once again we had a nice contingent of fans from Bermuda, the atmosphere there is always quite festive and we will be looking for even greater support from locals in years to come.?

The George Washington University swimming and diving program has hired former Olympian and Colonial Katura Horton-Perinchief as their diving coach.

Olympian Horton-Perinchief came to the school as a student-athlete before the 2004-05 academic year as a transfer graduate student from the University of Texas.

Competing last season, she earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honours in two events along with being named A-10 Academic All-Conference. Horton-Perinchief set school records in the one-meter and three-meter events and was subsequently named the 2005 Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Diver.

She qualified and competed at Nationals, becoming only the second-ever GW diver to do so.

While at Texas, Horton-Perinchief earned All-Big 12 honors and represented Bermuda at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Top juniors from either side of the Atlantic converge at Coral Beach later this month for the annual challenge matches.

The US team will take on Great Britain in the annual Maureen Connolly Challenge on September 29.

The three-day event will feature five of each nation?s top players, ages 14-16. They will play 11 matches in the tournament, and the United States has a 19-11 lead.

The US team includes Sarah Guzick, Joanna Mather, Nelly Redeva, Daisha Hill Hurtado and Kathryn Talbert.
