Coolridge D. Durham, 57, admitted drunk-driving near his home on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, at 2.20 a.m. on August 21.

His car crossed the centre line a number of times and he seemed to stumble out of his car when he was stopped, the court heard.

He had a blood alcohol level of 113 milligrammes in 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

Durham told the court he had been getting ready for a wedding and was fatigued. "I don't feel that I was incapable of handling my machine.'' He was fined $400 and banned from driving all vehicles for a year.

COURT CONFISCATES $28,000 IN CASH CTS A Warwick man had $28,000 confiscated by the courts yesterday after trying to take it off the Island without permission.

Anthony Burnell Zuill, 33, was convicted in July of trying to export the cash.

Customs found three bundles of US bills taped to the bottom of his suitcase.

Zuill, of Khyber Pass, admitted the offence. He was fined $1,000 and given a three month sentence.

Yesterday he returned to Magistrates' Court to hear the $28,000 was being forfeited.

When arrested, he said he was taking the money to his needy mother in Washington DC. He denied any connection with drugs.

IMPAIRED DRIVING COSTS MAN $400 CTS Driving while impaired proved to be a costly mistake for a Sandys man.

David Andrew Kellman, 34, of East Shore Road, pleaded guilty to the offence in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, told the court Police officers attended the scene of a two-vehicle accident on Somerset Road just before midnight on August 3.

Kellman, the driver of one of the cars, agreed to go to Somerset Police Station and take a breathalyser test.

But at the station he was unable to give a breath sample and was arrested, Sgt. Osborne said.

Kellman told the court he was tired and had dozed off while driving home.

Senior Magistrate, the Wor. Will Francis fined him $400 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for a year.

TELLER DENIES THEFT CTS A former bank teller yesterday pleaded not guilty to 17 charges of theft and fraud in Magistrates' Court.

Jeanann Dorothy White, 26, of Warwick, denied stealing a $10 savings book, cash totaling $1,660 from the Bank of Bermuda, and uttering altered withdrawal slips.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis set the matter down for mention on September 15.

FIRE CALLS INCREASE FIR The Bermuda Fire Service's special service statistics reported a rise in the number of emergency assistance calls during the month of August.

A total of 95 calls were received which was eight more than last year.

The estimated financial loss for the month was $18,061.

Out of these calls 66 were fire calls and 29 were for special services.

Special service calls are humanitarian assistance calls other than fires and include the following: floodings, rescues, road traffic accidents, roof coverings and boat sinkings.

They also include hazardous materials incidents and standby support during helicopter take off and landings.

The fire service responded to the majority of calls in Pembroke parish and the least in Smith's.

During last month the Fire Service responded to 16 reported structural fires, six brush fires and two vehicle fires.

There were also nine reported floodings, three gas cylinder leaks, three road traffic accidents and three ambulance transports.
