Three men banned for impaired driving
Three men were banned from the roads yesterday in separate drink driving cases.
John Arthur Cook, 24, of School Lane, Sandys, admitted driving an auxiliary cycle while impaired in the early hours of September 8.
Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told Magistrates' Court that Police responded to reports of a woman screaming for help in Warwick.
When they arrived at South Shore Road, near the entrance to Astwood Park, they saw a blue auxiliary cycle, and Cook involved in a dispute with his girlfriend.
"He stated that he and his girlfriend were travelling west and got involved in an argument which resulted in them falling off the bike," said Ms Burgess.
Cook's eyes were glazed, and he smelled of alcohol.
Asked by the Police if he had been drinking, the defendant replied: "Yeah, I've had four Heineken beers."
Eldon Robinson, 41, of Ballast Point Road, St. George's, admitted he rode his motorcycle on Court Street in Pembroke while impaired by alcohol.
Ms Burgess told the court that Police spotted him driving the wrong way on Church Street in the early hours of October 13.
He then headed onto Court Street, where he was stopped by the Police. When asked to dismount from the bike, he proved unsteady on his feet and had to be assisted.
Robinson confirmed he knew he was driving while impaired, telling the officers he was sorry.
Michael McGowan, 50, of Ramgoat Hill, Smith's, admitted driving a white Hyundai car on Middle Road, Smith's, on the afternoon of October 31.
Ms Burgess explained that Police saw the vehicle crossing the central line, speeding up and slowing down, and braking sharply for no reason.
When the vehicle was stopped by the officers, they observed that McGowan was unsteady on his feet.
The defendant told Acting Magistrate Justin Williams: "At the time I was sort of depressed and I had financial difficulties."
Mr. Williams handed out a $1,000 fine and 12-month driving ban to each of the defendants.
