Hubie's co-owner has 'no intention of selling' – lawyer
The owner of Hubie's Bar intends to carry on the business, despite the owners of the building putting it up for sale.
An advertisement to sell the building which houses Hubie's was placed in The Royal Gazette this week.
The two co-owners of the Angle Street property offered it for sale "as is" for $1.5 million. However Rick Woolridge Jr., lawyer for Eleanor Brown, wife of the late Hubert Brown, said: "Our client has no intention of selling the establishment."
Mrs. Brown was unavailable for comment yesterday but it is understood she will continue Hubie's as a jazz club, even in a different location.
Bermudians yesterday expressed sadness at the possibility of the building being sold.
Frances Eddy of Warwick told The Royal Gazette: "Change always has to come but if there is a new owner for the building that houses Hubie's Bar I trust it will be someone who will allow Hubie's to continue.
"What makes Hubie's so special is you never know which gifted musician or singer will show up from far or near on any given Friday night to play to an eclectic audience of locals, foreign workers and visitors, young and old. There can be anywhere from five to 13 musicians playing jazz, blues, and other genres for listening and dancing enjoyment.
"It is not a fancy place but that is a part of its charm. It is indeed an important cultural outlet and a Bermudian treasure. I can't imagine Bermuda without Hubie's."
