A food charity providing 2,000 meals a week to the Island’s needy has been given an emergency bailout by Bermuda CableVision. The Eliza DoLittle Society recently sounded the alarm over empty shelves at its food bank — with director Margaret Ward saying demand had surged in recent years.CableVision head Terry Roberson said the company, “devastated to learn of the dwindling supplies”, had given $5,000 to the Warwick-based charity, and organised a food drive among staff. He said Cablevision’s heavily-used Washington Mall office would be used as a drop-off point for donations of food by customers.“In fact, Bermuda CableVision will provide a $6 credit to the account of any customer who comes in with three non-perishable food items, and in addition, the customer will receive a coupon for a $5 video-on-demand movie.”Thanking Mr Roberson and staff, Ms Ward called the initiative “a breath of fresh air”.Non-perishable food in greatest demand includes pasta, canned soups, pancake mix, boxed cereals, juice boxes and peanut butter.Donations can be dropped off at The Eliza DoLittle Society’s Centre on 40 Cobb’s Hill Road. The food drive at Cablevision’s Customer Care Centre is to continue for the next two months.Useful website: www.elizadolittle.bm.
