Quincy Jones 'thrilled' to be on the Island

Multiple Grammy Award producer Quincy Jones and Premier Dr. Ewart Brown share a conversation after a press conference at the Cabinet Building to promote the upcoming Bermuda Music Festival. Mr. Jones is best known as the producer of the album Thriller, by pop icon Michael Jackson, which has sold over 110 million copies worldwide, and as the producer and conductor of the song "We Are the World".

Music legend Quincy Jones is "thrilled" to be on the Island and looking forward to performing in the Bermuda Music Festival.

The trip here is a first for the multiple Grammy Award winner.

"We are thrilled to be here," he said at a press conference at the Cabinet Office. "There are not very many places left in the world that we have not been.

"The closest I came was during a change over on a plane. I am looking forward to everything, the history. I'm honoured to be here."

Mr. Jones is to perform with a handful of musicians under the bill 'Quincy Jones and Friends', as part of the three-day festival planned for the Keep at Dockyard.

Asked what he would say to those who haven't yet bought tickets, Mr. Jones highlighted some of the entertainers to perform at the event.

"Well, we can start with this man to my left, James Ingram," he said. "Patti Austin, Erykah Badu, Chris Tucker who follows me all over the world doing Michael Jackson impressions Kenny Rogers, Michael McDonald.

"It's a family really. John Legend is just like my brother. It's going to be fun. It's great to have Bermuda giving us a platform."

Festival producer Rock Newman said: "Quincy is bringing in the Gombey Dancers, the Bermuda Mass Choir what is going to be a spectacular, thrilling performance on Halloween night. It's probably unlike anything I have ever seen."

Added Premier and Tourism Minister Ewart Brown: "Let me say that this is a very special day for us here at Cabinet to be able to welcome a man who is known everywhere in the world. A man who is an icon."

While here, Mr. Jones will also attend the premiere of 'This Is It', a movie featuring Michael Jackson. Mr. Jones worked with the late popstar on several projects over the years, most notably on his best-selling album, 'Thriller'.

Asked if he was excited about the screening, Mr. Jones said: "I'm still very torn up about Michael. When I was told about [the deaths of] Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael, it was like a hammer went through me."

The premiere of 'This Is It' screens tonight at Liberty Theatre at 8 p.m. The Bermuda Music Festival starts tomorrow night.
