Burglar jailed - hours after leaving prison

A Warwick man was imprisoned for three years for breaking into a Hamilton gas station - hours after he was released from prison.Clinton Smith, 35, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary in connection to a series of incidents which began on July 28.The court heard today that at 5pm that day, CCTV cameras at the BIU Service Station on Dundonald Street recorded Smith kicking in the front door of the building, entering an office, and running out.Gas station staff reported that almost $600 was taken from the building’s office.The next morning, Smith broke into the Rubis Service Station on Crow Lane. using a rock to smash a glass door, and after searching the cash register area, left with a $1.50 soda.On August 2, Smith again attempted to break in to the BIU Service Station, but was confronted by a security guard.The court heard that Smith had been released from prison on July 28, the same day as the first offence.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Smith to a total of three years imprisonment for the offences, to be followed by two years of probation.
