Children return to playing field where man was shot
Children returned to the Victor Scott Primary school field yesterday days after a brazen murder took place at the site.
Wendy Francis runs the Wacky Fun Camp during school holidays.
She said yesterday she felt it was important the children returned to the field to play and were able to feel safe.
"A few parents decided to keep their children at home today because they were nervous," she said. "But a lot of parents still wanted their children to come to camp. One mother asked that her daughter go out on the field because she has been too scared to over the weekend when her dad offered to fly kites here.
"I think it is important the children feel safe to come back on the field. We talked to them this morning about what happened. That is why we are out here today with them, to show them that it is OK and we are looking after them."
Kimwandae Walker was murdered in front of his two children and other families as they flew kites on Good Friday. Two men rode a bike onto the school field around 2.15 p.m. and started shooting at Mr. Walker.
The 35-year-old fell to the ground after being shot, got up and ran behind a van, but was followed by the shooter and shot again multiple times.
Parents collecting their children after camp yesterday said they weren't concerned the killers might return.
"Of course we feel safe," said one mother. "If we didn't feel safe we wouldn't let them come. It's not like they are shooting children."
Another parent agreed. She said she was confident the school was safe, despite the shooting on Good Friday.
A mother who lives in the area said: "Basically, when I knew that my child was coming to camp here, I told her to be careful and if she sees any guys congregating to ensure that she stays away and always stays close to her camp teacher.
"I didn't feel that her safety was an issue. And to give you an analogy, should I stop driving through any areas where there's been a drive-by shooting?"
The slaying happened close to where Shane Minors was fatally gunned down on his doorstep on Friswells Hill on December 17. No one has been charged with his death.
Ms Francis said a few of the children have been talking about the shooting and relaying what they had heard. She added that many of her 25 campers live in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Pembroke school.
"It is tough on everybody," she said. "Some went to school with the people who have been shot, or know them through a friend. The main concern is the children how are they supposed to have fun, good clean fun like we had back in the day, with all this going on?"
Two people have been arrested in connection with Mr. Walker's death, although no one has been charged.
