The St. George's Corporation is still interviewing applicants to run the Tobacco Bay Beach Pavilion concession which has been in the hands of Mr. Kenny Bascombe for the past 16 years.

Corporation Secretary Mr. Larry Jacobs said a total of eight business people had applied to run the pavilion since it was put out for tender last month.

Interviews were expected to be completed today but the Corporation property committee was not likely to make a decision until next month, he said. The contract was yearly but is now for three years, he said.

"Some applicants work in restaurants, some have restaurants and some are simply members of the community,'' Mr. Jacobs said.

Mr. Bascombe, who put in a bid, operates a fast food stand and rents beach gear from the pavilion.

St. George's Mayor the Wor. Henry Hayward said last month that there had been no change in policy that resulted in advertising for tenders earlier this year.

Mr. Bascombe's yearly contract with the Corporation expired in 1992 and he applied on a technical ground to have a one-year extension, which he was granted.

"We were a bit slack because we did not get around to advertising for tenders until March 1994,'' Mr. Hayward had said. "But at that time it would have been unfair to him or anyone else because it was the beginning of the season.

So we decided we would advertise at the end of the season.'' But Mr. Hayward said Mr. Bascombe had a good chance of holding on to the concession.

"All things taken into consideration, he might very well be allowed to stay.'' he said.
