Govt. analyst found blood in murder-accused's car

Government analyst Nadine Kirkos found blood in murder-accused Ze Selassie's car.

Tests for blood in murder-accused Ze Selassie's car came back positive, according to a crime scene examiner.

Selassie was also caught on security cameras at the Tynes Bay waste depot, apparently dropping off a trash bag the same morning that Rhiana Moore was found dead.

The evidence came yesterday during his ongoing trial at Supreme Court for the alleged premeditated murder of the pregnant 14-year-old.

According to prosecutors, Selassie stabbed Rhiana to death on or about Friday, May 30 last year. She'd gone missing around 9.20 p.m. that day after leaving a church youth group. Her body was found dumped in the water at Blue Hole Hill Park nature reserve at 11.38 a.m. the following day.

It is alleged that Selassie and Rhiana were involved in a secret relationship prior to her death, with her mother unaware of the relationship and that Rhiana was 27-30 weeks pregnant.

Selassie denies murder.

Government analyst Nadine Kirkos searched Selassie's blue Suzuki car for blood after his arrest. Three areas returned "positive presumptive" results the passenger door, passenger footwell and an area near the handbrake. She explained that a positive presumptive test indicates that an area may have blood on it and should be tested further.

She also prepared blood samples taken during autopsies on Rhiana and her unborn baby girl, which were sent off for DNA analysis.

Colvin Manning, who is in charge of the CCTV security cameras at the Tynes Bay depot, told the court he retrieved video footage and photographs from the system taken on the morning of May 31, 2008 and handed them to the Police at their request.

Defence lawyer John Perry QC admitted to the jury that Selassie is shown in the pictures getting out of a blue car and apparently taking a trash bag into the depot, then leaving. The pictures were taken by the security cameras between 8.38 a.m. and 8.39 a.m. that day.

The trial also heard yesterday from Brenda Davidson, senior medical officer at the Department of Health. She examined Selassie around 10.30 p.m. on May 31 after he'd been arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

She described him as a dark-skinned black male of stocky build, 5ft 4ins tall and 162 lbs. She observed that during the examination: "He was cooperative and appeared relaxed and unconcerned."

Dr. Davidson observed that Selassie had a small horizontal abrasion on this inside of his left ankle that was healed. He had a small superficial cut on his right ankle which, she said, appeared to be less than 24 hours old and caused by a "sharp article".

In answer to a question from defence lawyer Mr. Perry, Dr. Davidson said she is aware that Selassie was a construction worker.

Detective Constable Warren Bundy told the court that after Rhiana's body was found, he and other members of the Serious Crime Unit attended a Police briefing in which Selassie was named as a suspect.

A search warrant was executed at his home in Battery Road, St. David's, after the briefing and Selassie was arrested. His blue Suzuki car and cell phone were also seized during the house search.

After Dr. Davidson examined him at the Police station later, Selassie gave permission for Det. Con. Bundy to take DNA samples from him using a small swab inside each of his cheeks.

A total of four taped interviews were conducted with Selassie before he was formally charged with premeditated murder at Magistrates' Court on June 5. He was accompanied by a lawyer during each interview, and replied "no comment" in response to questions. The detective agreed with defence lawyer Mr. Perry that this was Selassie's legal right.

Det. Con. Bundy also told the jury that Selassie refused offers of food while in custody. When asked if he wanted his parents to bring him any personal items, he is said to have replied: "I don't want to burden them".

The case continues, with evidence expected today from blood-spatter expert Jan Johnson and DNA expert Candy Zuleger.
