Bikers deal a winning hand to cancer centre
A pack of bikers presented a jackpot of cash to a cancer charity at the weekend in a poker run across the Island.
The Bermuda Classic Bike Club and Long Riders Motorcycle Club joined forces to raise $630 for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.
Last month being Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the bikers staged the poker run to support the Centre in encouraging men not to leave their health to chance.
Participants were handed a deck of five cards in various destinations, filling in their game cards as they went.
The men set off from the Cancer and Health Centre in Paget, stopping at St. George's Town Square for the first playing card, then Shelly Bay Pizza House, Astwood Park, Dockyard, and finally returning to the Centre.
Each biker paid $20 per game sheet, with 50 percent of the proceeds going towards the charity and 50 percent to the man with the best 'hand'.
The run itself held on Saturday morning, raised $360. Participants contributed another $90 to the cause and the winner, Walter Carlington, also donated his $180 winnings.
Craig Morfitt, Bermuda Classic Bike Club president, said: "We had nine riders turn out and despite low numbers, we were able to raise $630 for the Cancer and Health Centre.
"We had a fairly low turnout but the people who came out recognised it was a very worthy cause, and that was reflected by the money they donated.
"The best hand was three nines and everyone seemed to have a good time. After the ride the Cancer Centre put on some sandwiches for us and a couple of the guys also had a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test. So it all went really well."
More than 220 men attended the Cancer Centre's free walk-in PSA clinic on Saturday. Organised in partnership with the Bermuda Hospitals Board, it was the culmination of this month's campaign which aimed to increase awareness of prostate cancer.
