Boulevard triumph in Friendship

Boulevard picked up their first win since the Martonmere Cup semi-final - five games ago -- after first half goals last night at Somerset put paid to Southampton Rangers.

Boulevard, still struggling to win in the league and probably realising that their best hopes of success rests in the cup competitions, played with more enthusiasm and determination than their opponents.

Ross Lambe drove a long range shot past a post for Rangers and at the other end a curling cross from Janeiro Tucker went past the far post. Boulevard, with sheer aggression, were causing some problems for the Rangers back four.

The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when captain Dwight Warren gave Boulevard a deserved lead with a low shot under the diving Darren Burchall in goal following a move down the right side which enabled Warren to score inside the near post.

Burchall looked suspect with his handling and was lucky to escape in the 27th minute when he allowed a high cross from the right from Dean Boyles to go through his hands. Fortunately for him there was no Boulevard playing lurking nearby to meet the loose ball.

Whatever hopes Rangers had of a fightback were dashed in the 37th minute when Boulevard doubled their lead. It started when Stevie Wade went on a run down the right flank and was brought down by Larry Simmons.

Play was held up for several minutes while both players received treatment and when the game resumed Warren flighted in the freekick which Burchall tipped over the bar for a corner on the left side. The ball was played short to fullback Albert Caisey and he chipped it into the middle where Michael Holdipp scored with a free header from inside the six yard box.

Minutes later Warren's low hard cross from the left side of the box went untouched across goal as Boulevard kept on the pressure. Then in the last minute of the half Leonard Hypolite, who had a busy night in midfield, threaded a ball through the middle for Warren but Burchall made a timely clearance.

Wade, who never fully recovered from the shoulder injury he received in the fall earlier in the half, was replaced in first half injury time when youngster Kaven Lottimore came on.

The game lost a bit of its edge in the second half as Boulevard appeared content to hold onto their two-goal lead, which Rangers seldom threatened.

Even top marksman Janeiro Tucker was off with his shooting as he put a 30-yard freekick well wide -- an indication it was not going to be Rangers' night.

The teams spent most of the second half involved in niggling fouls as referee Leroy Wilson added three names to that of Stevie Wade in the first half, with Wayne Richardson of Boulevard and Rangers pair Dijoun Simons and Janeiro Tucker going into his book.

The result means Rangers have now gone three games without a win while Boulevard advance to the next round of the competition -- the last eight -- where they will meet last season's other promoted team, Somerset Eagles on January 9.
