Colts boosted by fresh training approach

Focused: Detroy Smith

St. George's midfielder Detroy Smith has that revealed an improved attitude to training is the secret behind Colts' 13-match unbeaten streak in the First Division this season.

Bermudian footballers are not renowned for their commitment to practicing, but Smith insists coach Richard Todd has successfully altered his players approach to training with his 'don't train, don't play' policy.

In his first season at the helm Todd has guided Colts to the top of the First Division and with seven games remaining the title is firmly in their sights.

"It is true training attendances have been much better this season and that is down to our coach," said Smith. "We all know if we do not show up to training then we need not even think about playing on Sunday.

"You have to take your hat off to the coach who has instilled discipline into the team. You also have to take your hat off the players who have met his demands."

Should they beat X'Roads at Wellington Oval on Sunday, the East Enders would go three points ahead of second place Robin Hood who have a bye week.

Hood have also played two games more than Colts.

Smith is not taking anything for granted and knows X'Roads, who toppled promotion contenders St.David's recently, are more than capable of causing an upset.

"We are back at Wellington Oval on Sunday and we have not conceded a single goal at home so far this season," he said. "The three points are definitely there for the taking but X'Roads can be a tricky team to play against.

"There is a chance for us to put some daylight between ourselves and Robin Hood but nothing is won in February and there are plenty of games to go."

St.George's dominance this season has been all the more impressive considering the promotion race has been one of the most intriguing in recent memory.

Colts' East End rivals St.David's are just one behind, while newcomers Hood and MR Onions have added another dimension to Bermuda football's second tier and strengthened the division no end.

And for those reasons, Smith said Colts are not even thinking about the possibility of remaining unbeaten and are solely focused on finishing in one of the top two promotion positions.

"We are not aiming to go unbeaten, or anything like that," said Smith, "We are just focusing on getting promotion, that's our number one goal. We are taking one game at a time and the rest will take care of itself. We are all chasing the same promotion dream."
