Canadians lift snooker crown

team tournament honours and the Joe Davis Memorial Trophy when they defeated Toronto 6-0 to boost their final score to 44 points.

Comprising of Canadian amateur champion Ken Shea, Maurice Doucet and Don Thomas, Halifax only needed three points to take over the top spot from Bermuda's number two team.

Bermuda II, consisting of Paul Charleton, Steve Pantry and Mike Wood, totalled 40 points in the week-long tournament, having finished strongly after a slow start.

Bermuda I and Wales tied for third place on 37 points. Chicago finished with 35, Scotland 32, NYAC 31, Old Colony Club 31, England 30, Toronto 27, Canada 26 and New York Knights 22.

The singles tournament saw Peter Norrie of Scotland, Ken Shea of Halifax, Steve Dunleavy of Bermuda and Paul Fleming of Canada make it through to the semi-finals with Fleming and Shea then advancing to the best-of-five final.

And it was Shea who proved the better player, dismissing his opponent 3-0 to lift the Bill Olsen Memorial handicap trophy.

The doubles semi-finals saw the teams of Coyle (Bermuda) and Haddock (Toronto) face Deboer (Toronto) and Dawson (Bermuda) with Deboer/Dawson advancing, and Aravana (NY) and McLean (Bermuda) getting past Cross (Wales) and Dunleavy (Bermuda) in the other match.

Aravena and McLean edged out a 2-0 win in the final.

Biggest match of the tournament was the singles scratch which pitted the 16 best players against each other.

In the quarter-finals Tom Kollins (US) defeated Rolando Aravena (NYAC), Steve Dunleavy (Bermuda) defeated Steve Roberts (Bermuda), Ken Shea (Halifax) defeated Noel Miller-Cheevers (England) and Paul Charleton (Bermuda) defeated Peter Norrie (Scotland). Kollins then downed Dunleavy and Charleton sunk Shea to meet in the best of seven final.

Kollins took advantage of Charleton's defensive style of play in the first frame to win 62-26, posting a 39 break on the way. Charleton bounced back with a 45-36 win in the second frame.

But it was Kollins who took the third 60-43 despite a 26 break by his opponent before Charleton again pulled the match back to even with a 57-29 win in the fourth with breaks of 18 and 29.

Kollins regained the lead in the fifth with a 59-14 win and went on to seal victory 4-2 with a 67-35 win in the sixth frame.

Next year sees the tournament move to New York from May 21 to May 31 at the New York Athletic Club. In 1999 it will be held in Dublin, Ireland and in 2000 in Chicago, Illinois.
