Around the Courts

The long arm of the law might be slow at times, but it finally caught up with a speed loving 24-year-old from Sandys who failed to appear in court for several speeding violations ? including some from two years ago.

Appearing in Magistrates? Court on Friday after being arrested on a warrant, Jumaane Davis from George?s Bay Lane pleaded guilty to speeding at 58 kph on North Shore Road in Devonshire on June 4, 2003 and guilty to not having a valid driver?s licence at the time.

He was fined $250 for speeding, or 21 days default and $100 for not having a licence.

However, as for the other incidents of not having a valid licence and speeding, which included a 68 kph race along South Road in Paget on August 4, 2003 and a fine for 71 kph in Southampton on February 19 this year, he pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said he felt like keeping Davis in custody because of his habit of not showing up for court, but in the end released the young man on $1,000 bail with one surety.

Davis is to return to court on November 23 for trial.

A drink driver from Paget constantly stumbled and had trouble putting his motorcycle on its stand, a court heard.

Harold Schaufler was riding a hire bike when he was stopped by Police on South Road, Paget.

Officers noticed his breath stunk of alcohol, his eyes were glazed and he was unsteady on his feet.

The 23-year-old admitted drink driving at 12.20 a.m. on November 1. He apologised to the court and said he would never do it again.

Schaufler, of Southcote Close, appeared at Magistrates? Court, and was banned from driving all vehicles for one year. He was also fined $1,000.
