Focus on preventing drug abuse

Drug abuse and its prevention is a focus for a national organisation and the 'Dean of Street Psychology' is coming to Bermuda this week to help.

In an effort to focus on drug abuse by youth in Bermuda, the Department of National Drug Control are partnering with US author, motivator and community educator Alfred "Coach" Powell for Youth Leadership Training for Drug Abuse Prevention.

It is Mr. Powell's research into street culture, the marketing of violence, irresponsible sex and urban youths' chemical addition, as well as his 20 years working as a high school track and football coach, which has earned him the title "Dean of Psychology.

The three day training will be held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess on March 15, 16 and 17 for young people between the ages of 16 and 23.

Youth from local high schools and the Bermuda College will be able to learn advocacy and leadership skills while exploring the hip hop mindset, values and culture.

Also speaking at the conference will be Carlnika Roser, a Bermuda Police Service Drug and Gang Prevention Officer, and Department of National Drug Control Drug Prevention Officer, Kimberly Jackson.

Mrs. Jackson said: "The drug abuse prevention focus for 2007/2008 is designed to help achieve real change in our neighbourhoods by engaging all sectors of the community around drug abuse prevention.

"This focus is supported by the prevention science of engaging diverse community efforts to prevent use and promote positive youth development."

The training by Mr. Powell is also expected to develop the National Youth Board, which will then begin to engage young people in public debate and share drug abuse prevention information.

Mr. Powell will also provide training for professionals who work with youth today to understand the 'intoxication' of the hip hop generation.
