Sad farewell: musician and grassroots activist Cleveland Simmons is off to live in Britain with his family

Bermuda will say goodbye to a “legend in the community” when musician and grassroots activist Cleveland Simmons leaves to live in Britain, a former culture minister has said.Dale Butler was speaking at a farewell concert organised by Mr Simmons, whose nickname is Outta Sight.Mr Butler said: “Outta Sight has been an entertainer all of his life and never, ever has he stopped trying to find solutions to Bermuda’s problems.“It is a sad day to see a man, even at his age as a legend in the community, now leaving the country and I am sure he will be even more involved in England.” The event was held at the corner of Church Street and Victoria Street in Hamilton last Sunday. Mr Simmons, a veteran musician and promoter who set up the Bermuda Island Entertainment Agency, performed one last time with his band, The Bermuda Legends. But Mr Simmons, 77, promised he would return to Bermuda for musical performances.Mr Simmons, who is moving to be closer to family, said he had mixed emotions about leaving Bermuda after living here his entire life. Mr Simmons said: “I am looking forward to spending more time with my family, but I am also exhausted mentally and spiritually. It is very emotional, but I will be promoting more events in England and would love to still work with my band over there.”Graham Nesbitt, a former Bermuda Industrial Union organiser, was also at the concert, which attracted a crowd of about 30 people. He said: “It is going to be sad to see him go. I have been working with him since the Seventies doing promotions over the years.“One of the most memorable events was the Youth Summit we did at Fort Hamilton in the Seventies where we invited schoolchildren from around the island to come and perform. “It is sad to see him go, but the work he did will continue — we would like to organise more events here in the future every month.”George Palmer, the owner of T-shirts Unlimited, said Mr Simmons had helped him to sell his goods at many events over the years. He added: “As a promoter in Bermuda, he will be a big miss. He had the initiative to bring talent out of people.”
