Keeping it in the family

CultureFest 2000 at St. David's field on Sunday night will feature headliners Morgan Heritage, Cocoa Tea, Ras Shiloh, Iley Dread and Junior C.

`family affair'.

CultureFest 2000 at St. David's field on Sunday night will feature headliners Morgan Heritage, Cocoa Tea, Ras Shiloh, Iley Dread and Junior C.

The five young band members who form the core of Morgan Heritage -- Gramps, Una, Peter, Lukes and Mr. Mojo -- are the offspring of reggae great Denroy Morgan, former lead vocalist of the Black Eagles.

The unique sound of the group is partially due to the number of cultural influences which shaped their upbringing -- Rastafarians since birth, the siblings were born in Brooklyn New York, raised in Springfield Massachusetts and recorded music with their Jamaican father on weekends.

The group released two lesser-known albums before producing `Protect Us Jah' which put them on the map. The albums `One Calling', `Morgan Heritage and Friends Vol. One' and `Don't Haffi Dread' followed.

Kurvin Spence, part promoter of Outlaw Production, said the group is expected to perform hits such as `Down By The River' and `Don't Haffi Dread'.

"Morgan Heritage has 15 people coming with them -- they're on tour right now and they'll be leaving Virginia to come to Bermuda, then heading to New Orleans,'' said Mr. Spence.

And he said that father Denroy Morgan will be giving a rare performance.

"It's all culture music and there won't be any cursing, so it's appropriate for kids,'' he added.

Cocoa Tea, born Calvin Scott, has been a force to contend with in the reggae music industry for more than 25 years.

"Cocoa Tea is vintage material, he'll be performing `Rastaman Chant' and `Israel King','' said Mr. Spence. "People know him as the veteran singer who was out with Dennis Brown and Jacob Miller.'' "The last time Cocoa Tea performed it poured rain -- but he still gave a great performance and kept the people there,'' he added.

Cocoa Tea is perhaps best known for some of his 1989 and 1990 hits including `Pirate's Anthem', `Who She Love' and `Holding On'.

He performs regularly with a number of dancehall sound systems including Gemini, Stone Love, and Metromedia.

The concert will also feature Ras Shiloh, whose hit `Are You Satisfied' off the LaLaBella was popular in Bermuda a few summers ago.

Special guest Iley Dread, who is production manager of foreign promoter Kings of Kings, will also perform.

And Bermudian recording artist Junior C will flex his lyrical skills early in the night.

"Junior C has come out with a new album, and it'll be good exposure for him opening for Morgan Heritage,'' said Mr. Spence.
