Silly Sammy costs Zebras: PHC title drive slowed by double sending off

Dev Colts 0 PHC 0 Coach Sammy Swan showed the kind of indiscipline he would not condone in his players -- and it could cost PHC the title.

Swan was sent packing by referee Stuart Crockwell in the 56th minute of this uninspiring match at White Hill Field for a deliberate handball in his opponents' box after earlier earning a first yellow card for not retreating ten yards at a free kick.

Ten minutes later, solid defender Dano Outerbridge halted Marvin Belboda unfairly, and was also given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

The leaders, who saw their gap reduced to two points following North Village's win over Southampton, were down to nine men for the last quarter of the game, but Devonshire Colts did their best to help them when Jamal Simmons got himself dismissed in farcical circumstances.

Defender Simmons, aware that he was likely to be the player pulled off as manager David Furbert looked to bring on Jamaine Aberdeen, let the bench know in no uncertain terms that he would never play for the club again if he was substituted.

Furbert seemed to have opted for discretion when Tito Smith was first called over to the sideline but then quickly changed his mind and called for Simmons to come off.

That was the defender's cue to rip off his shirt, throw it on the ground and storm off towards the dressing room. Unfortunately that show of temper cost his side dear as referee Stuart Crockwell raced after him to show the red card to his retreating back.

With the dismissal confirmed, Colts were left with only 10 men as Aberdeen twiddled his thumbs on the touchline.

Ironically, a few minutes later he got his chance when Smith did give way to him.

PHC had gone into the game knowing that a win would have virtually assured them of the Premier Division title. Devonshire Colts, likewise, knew a win would stave off any lingering relegation fears.

In the event, with this draw and the results elsewhere, neither side can let up just yet.

When there was some worthwhile football, the woodwork got in the way. Colts' Marvin Belboda ran on to a punt upfield on the right, eased his way into the box and squared for Alzame Zuill. The country's leading goalscorer in all competitions, Zuill looked sure to net, but was shocked to see the ball take a deflection onto the upright.

PHC's best chance of the half came when a free kick was played into Stephen Astwood on the edge of the box and he laid it back into the path of the running Ottis Steede, who saw his powerful goal-bound blast excellently parried by the flying Troy Hall.

Hall denied Astwood and Steede again at the beginning of the second half, while the usually effervescent Belboda only found his feet a couple of times for Colts, on one occasion rounding keeper Carlyle Crockwell but being forced too wide to get in a meaningful effort.
