Bermudians spark Academy victory

St. Johnsbury Academy boys team to their 25th Vermont Division I State Meet championship last Saturday.

The Hilltoppers amassed 126 points to finish well ahead of second-placed Essex Junction on 89. A total of 15 state schools participated.

The competition began in 1928 and over the past 15 years a number of Bermudians have represented St. Johnsbury Academy.

Ming, described by a Vermont newspaper as a "speed demon'', was unstoppable in the 100 metres which he won in 11.3 seconds. Ming followed that up with a second in the 200 metres (24.2 seconds) and a third in the 400 metres (52.2 seconds).

Ming, a senior who played soccer for the school -- when home he plays on the wing for First Division Dandy Town -- was also third in the triple jump with a leap of 42-feet, 61 inches.

Simmons, also a senior, finished third in both the long jump (20-feet, 53 inches) and triple jump (41-feet, 11 inches) and was also sixth in the 200 metres in 24.8 seconds. Simmons was a member of the 4x100 metres relay which placed second in 45.5 seconds.

Bayon Robinson, a junior who also plays basketball for the school, placed first in the 800 metres in 2:01.1 and was fourth in the 400 metres in 52.5 seconds.

Another local, Nick Pearman, would have competed but was sidelined through injury.

The top six finishers in each event earned a spot in tomorrow's inaugural Meet of Champions at Middlebury College.

Ming is the son of Derek and Rochelle Ming of Pembroke, Robinson the son of Wallace and Lornette Robinson of Smith's and Simmons the son of Mrs. Sharon Simmons of St. George's.

JAMAL SIMMONS -- third in both long jump and triple jump at the Vermont college championships.
